Most of us use a computer every day. In the home or at work, computer use has become a way of life. In order to make our computer work more comfortable and efficient, many of us prefer a particular kind of mouse. From the standard two button wired economy mouse, to a multi button wireless mouse using an optical laser, there are many to choose from to fit one’s particular preference and application. What is often overlooked however is the mouse pad. We often take this simple, yet important peripheral for granted. If you don’t agree with me, try operating your computer without one! Even the best optical mouse won’t function properly without a good surface to read from.
From the very first moment that a mouse was used, it became necessary to employ a complimentary surface to ensure the best result. The first mice operated by reading signals from two perpendicularly mounted wheels that measured the two dimensional movements of the mouse. These metal or plastic wheels needed a surface to gain traction upon. Hence the underappreciated mouse pad was born. Some of the very first used where made of wood which yielded a nice combination of good traction and ease of movement. The mouse quickly evolved however and the newer designs used a steel ball to register the movements of the mouse. In order to gain traction for the ball, mouse pads made of rubber became the norm.
Later, the steel ball in most mice was given a silicone coating to increase traction and give smoother operation. This type of mouse needed a smooth cloth bonded to the mouse pad and pa-1650-02 adapter for the best operation. The silicone ball tended to pick up lint and debris however and often required cleaning. Partly because of this, optical mice were developed. This next step eliminated the need for mechanical components in the mouse and instead used a LED or laser to read the surface movement of the mouse and register the result. Optical mice were a breakthrough technology and allowed for effective use on a variety of surfaces which meant that mouse pads could once again be made with a variety of surface types.
Today, there are many different mouse pad designs using many materials. Additionally, the shape, color, or surface decoration possibilities are endless. Another important addition to many mouse pads is the use of wrist supports. These padded raised surfaces help eliminate hand fatigue and create a comfortable ergonomic hand position for comfortable extended use. No matter what style of mouse pad you prefer, there are surely plenty of choices that will optimize the comfort and performance of your mouse.
